How To Make Summer (or anytime) Reading Fun
It’s National Get Caught Reading Month. SIde note- why do you need to get caught reading?🧐🧐🧐. Anywho let me focus on the theme at hand. This is also a good time to focus on reading with the summer coming up in order to prevent the summer slump- when kids forget what they learned during the school year. Let’s just use the the “holiday” and share some tips on how to make reading fun and to highlight some of the #2livecrew’s favorite reads.
Pick books with your kids interests in mind.
Find books that match their hobbies, ethnicity, abilities, all the things that make them unique. The kids love seeing African American characters because they can relate to the curly hair. They are also huge fans of Trolls so we have a good collection of Troll themed books. We include books with diverse characters so that we can learn about other cultures.
Incorporate in a routine
We include it in routine. It’s apart of bed time and also as a fun activity on weekends. It happens so often that it’s not viewed as a chore- it’s just something we do. I read the book to them and sometimes Beanie will read the book to us. Buster is just starting to learn sight words so he’s not reading yet. However he does point out what’s going on in the pictures.
Read in multiple locations/reading book and/or create a reading nook
To spice it up we read in the tent in Buster’s room. They love snuggling up with their iPads or a book. They also get a kick out of seeing me scrunch up into their tent. We also read in their playroom, in the family room and while out and about. The #2livecrew has gotten really good at reading traffic signs-did Ohio BMV give them a driver’s license and I didn’t know about it?😳🧐🤣
Do activities associated with the books.
If the main character is a doctor, the kids play doctor around the house. Beanie enjoys giving me shots although she screams bloody murder in the doctor‘s office when she has to get one😳. Create crafts or do activities that the characters are doing in the book. For The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, we made caterpillars with playdoh and created butterfly pictures.
