Five Ways to Save on Halloween Costumes
We are in the home stretch of the countdown to Trick or Treating and (no judgement) you don't have a costume. There is still time to save on a costume for this year with the following tips.
Check your Inventory
Do you have more than one kid? Check what Halloween costumes you currently have and see if they could fit younger siblings AND if the younger siblings are interested in wearing the costume. Don't take the fun out of Halloween by forcing unwanted costumes just to save a buck. You can also check with family and friends to see if they have old costumes you can borrow that your child is interested in.
Purchase at Once Upon A child/thrift store
Once upon a child is perfect for Costumes. It is a resell shop that sells gently used clothes, toys, and baby equipment at a fraction of the original cost. Buy an almost new (and sometimes unused) costumes for cheap. I purchased the #2livecrew Mickey and Minnie Mouse costumes for a TOTAL of $25. I couldn't get out of that store fast enough to spread the word about the deal I just got!
Thrift Stores are also crucial for saving on homemade costumes, especially cartoon characters. Since they typically wear the same outfit every episode, you could always buy a similar outfit and make modifications cheaply. If you are feeling crafty, google “DIY Halloween costumes” and you will find a plethora of cheap and quick costumes to make with some things you have around the house.
Look out for sales
Indigenous Peoples Day is coming up and a lot of retailers use this holiday to push sales. Signing up for your favorite retailers emailing list will give you updates on flash sales leading up to Halloween. Carter’s wins the cutest first Halloween costume which are on sale up to 50 percent as of the blog pushing date.
Buy multipurpose costumes
Buy costumes in which parts or the whole thing can be reused throughout the year. There are some really cute pajama sets at Children's place that can serve as a costume for Halloween and be used late in its original purpose. I would suggest layering the pajamas with black sweatpants and crew neck shirt underneath if you live in an area where it is cold on Halloween night. Skeletons or mummies are two good options on children's place.
Buy at the end of the season for next year
Depending on the costume this can be risky. If you have a child that is a giant for his age and/or grows in unpredictable manner, this option is not for you. My children wear the same size as there age or (one size smaller) depending on the outfit. So it is easy for me to take advantage of off season sales because they grow at the same rate every year.
I would buy the next size up for a costume for next year.
Kids costumes can be easy to find and not break the bank on something they will only wear once. I have utlilized these tips throughout the years to save money and ball out on fun😉
