There's No Wright Way To Change Your Mind
Are there things that you’ve seen or heard about that you said you would never do as a parent? You know that moment in the grocery store when full judgement eyes come out as you clutch your imaginary pearls seeing an unfavorable interaction between a parent and child. So if I’m being completely honest, I would have never ever ever allowed my children to wear those animal book bag harnesses. That was my vow that I made. I even made sure my husband knew where we stood on the issue so there would be no confusion. Pre children I couldn’t believe that people would buy these contraptions and put them on children. Like who can’t get their kids to understand that they have to hold your parents hand when in public. Every time I saw it in public, I stared with my disapproval and confused eyes. Fast forward, Beanie is 2 and Buster is 1 and my mom says, “I got these bags because I’ll need them to keep up with the kids.”
“Not my children, you just need to hold their hands.” “I’ll just use it when you’re not here cuz I’m not chasing them down.”
Me: 😑
Let’s fast forward again to today. Beanie is 3 and Buster is 2. I want to take them for a walk and just hold hands walking through the neighborhood. I ask my mom to come with us so she can hold one child’s hand and I hold the other child’s hand. She gives me this look 🤨 and then suggests using their “bags” to assist us on the walk. I happily agree.
Insert full record skip. I know you’re wondering what has changed from a vow to never use such a contraption to now I’m happily agreeing to the idea. I’ll tell you what happened- Life and 2 rambunctious Irish twins happened. I used to think those harnesses were only for mothers who couldn’t control their kids. No it’s for moms who want to make sure they have control even in the unknown. Making sure a kid doesn’t dart in the wrong direction unexpectedly while walking kind of control. Even if you have the most well mannered kids, there’s a chance they can escape in a crowd at a fair and create a panicked search at the state fair. By the way, that's a true story about me at 3 years old.
Be honest. We are in the circle of trust here. Are there things you vowed you would never do with your kids that you find yourself doing? Confess in the comments below.
